Accidental Kitchen Remodel: The Price Tag

I promised you a grand total and I have delivered. A few days late, but who's really keeping track?
So, without further ado, here are the (pretty much totally correct, receipts are hard m'kay?) numbers:

Refinished floor (poly, stain, scrapers, applicators)............................................................................$95
Cabinet hardware (Martha Stewart - Home Depot).......................................................................$89.20
Paint (ceiling, walls).......................................................................................................................$23.46
Chair (from Conan's old studio)............................................................................................................$0

Chalkboard paint.................................................................................................................................$9
Chest of drawers................................................................................................................................$25
Reclaimed shelf (brackets).............................................................................................................$7.36
Stove...................................................................................................................................................$45
Saddle blanket/rug (on extended loan from Mom : )...........................................................................$0
Accessories (Mortar and pestle, utensil holder).................................................................................$17
Misc wiring, painter tape, brushes.................................................................................................$16.89

Total
(drumroll, please)

$390.91

Under 400 big ones is pretty respectable. Considering the fact that most kitchen remodels are about 25 times that amount, I think we made out pretty okay.

The secret to saving mega dough?

We didn't buy any "new" appliances.
Yes, technically the stove is new but...is it really?
The other secret?
No new cabinets or countertrops. Just paint and hardware and a little dish organizing.

Will we ever "remodel" remodel the kitchen? I couldn't say. We'll have to see how this one holds up. Right now, everything works perfectly and we have enough storage for * us.*
Some things I would like to add:

- a big, antique pantry (I've had my eye on one for months but they just WILL NOT come down on the price! Anybody got any haggling secrets?)

- a butcher block island or some type of island/table for the center of the kitchen.

Basically, we love it and we love the price tag and we're so so so glad that we pulled the trigger on this project and started tearing down that ceiling a couple of months ago.

Again, thanks for all of your suggestions and encouragement. You guys are the BEST!
Onward and upward to the next project!

We're thinking, some kind of "Choose Your Own Adventure" remodel. Would you guys be down for voting on every aspect of something or not so much?

*I should add that we live literally, across the street from a grocery store so we don't need much food storage space.

  4. O.M.G. I am in love with you guys...and your blog!

Your kitchen is faaaabulous... I love your idea about a butcher block island, here's a link I ran across recently...to maybe inspire you and an idea to keep the cost uber low. http://kleypas.blogspot.com/2009/06/countertops.html
If you two found a sweet antique dresser and were able to get a wider width block, you could pony up some bar-stools and kick it! Or hook up some casters so you can move that puppy outta the way if need be.
This site has some great pictures...some of them I am jonesing to have in my place. http://theinspiredroom.net/2011/09/20/beyond-typical-and-white-fresh-kitchen-ideas/

Anyway...I'm so glad I found your blog and cant wait to read more :-)

    1. Thanks for the links! I really like how they did their counter tops. We had thought about doing something like that with our old counter tops, and we might still eventually, but it'll have to wait for now.

  5. There are two words to describe your remodeled kitchen: frugal and sophisticated. $390.91 is just a small amount when we’re talking about kitchen remodeling, but you absolutely made your way to renovate your kitchen remarkably. Kudos!

    1. Well, Katherine knows how to pursue a good deal, and when she knows what she wants, she's going to find it. She is, simply, amazing.

  6. WOW! In just $390.91 you were able to transform your kitchen from ordinary kitchen space into an elegant modern kitchen. =D I adore you for being such a thrifty person. Most kitchen remodel is double and sometimes, triple, the price of what you spend for this. Kudos for this wonderful change! +Camille Edington

    1. Thanks! When we first moved in, I really didn't like the kitchen AT ALL. Fast forward four years and it's basically the same kitchen but I love it. Go, figure! You can do a lot with a little if you're thrifty and patient. Very, very patient : )
