What's with naming a blog about working on an old house "Keep Smiling" you may ask? Why not something clever like, "Home on the Range" or "Too Young to Know Better"?
Well, when we first started dating way back in 2008, one of our favorite pastimes was watching the show Green Acres which, as you may or may not know depending on the year you were born or the kind of stuff your parents liked to watch when you were growing up (that was our case), is about a couple who moves into a...let's just call it a fixer-upper. In one particular episode, Eddie Albert is offered a complete kit for making a house a home. Included in the kit is your choice of two cross stitched mottos:
Home Sweet Home
or
Keep Smiling
When we moved into this house we felt a lot like poor Eddie up there. No heat, no bathroom ceiling and no clue. So when it came time to pick a name for the blog, we knew exactly what to do. Yes, it may be Home Sweet Home now but as anyone who has bought a house nearing the century mark will tell you, there are more problems than solutions sometimes and the most important thing you can do is just
Keep Smiling.
And for the record, he chose Keep Smiling.

I grew up watching these classic shows that I loved so much. Longing to revisit these shows, I subscribed to Hulu which has all the seasons of Green Acres. I didn't noticed at first until the episode what you're referring to. then I realized that the Keep Smiling moniker also appeared twice on the very first episode. It was written in chalk below the unemployment and draft board signs. Now I going through the rest to see if it reappears.
ReplyDeleteThat's so funny! We haven't watched it in years but I think I'm going to have to go back and check out that little Easter egg in the first episode now! Thanks!
